What finally sealed it? The songs. You know, I used to feel like once you got past a top 20, the numbers were arbitrary. Then I felt that way about the top This year, I think I agonized more about what to include in numbers than I did between 30 and the album of the year.

Cities of Mars, Temporal Rifts Snowy Dunes, Atlantis Rozamov, This Mortal Road PH, Eternal Hayden Sasquatch, Maneuvers Young Hunter, Dayhiker Ufomammut, 8 Paradise Lost, Medusa Beastmaker, Inside the Skull Primitive Man, Caustic Album) Motorpsycho, The Tower Arbouretum, Song of the Rose Hymn, Perish Pallbearer, Heartless Dool, Here Now There Then. So much. The Young Hunter record?

Some of their best work yet. Like I said at the outset, one more album and my head was gonna explode this year. Way too much to ever hope to keep up with. One thing though I felt like I really wanted to emphasize including was Dool.

I did this back in June as well, but I also want to draw attention to a swath of quality live albums that came out this year. Live Albums: 1.

SubRosa, Subdued Live at Roadburn 2. Causa Sui, Live in Copenhagen 3. Slomatics, Futurians Live at Roadburn 4. Wight, Fusion Rock Invasion 5.

Death Alley, Live at Roadburn. Musically and otherwise. Thank you for reading. Tattoo it on my forehead. Thank you to The Patient Mrs. To long-time readers and to newcomers alike — thank you so much. This year has seen a fair share of ups and downs, but the support this site gets sustains me in ways I never expected it could, and that would be impossible without LP.

Please know how crucial that is to me. Well, that should do it. I know there are probably disagreements about where things landed on the list, what was included, what was left out, Visualistic - Micranots - Obelisk Movements (Vinyl, etc.

Otherwise, have at it. This entry was posted on Thursday, December 28th, at am and is filed under Features. You can follow any responses to this entry through the RSS 2.

The only difference from the list I sent in a week ago is that I placed it at number one. Like you, I also feel that they can do no wrong. Have you listened to Vice Versa? They are a heavy psych outfit from Moscow, Russia. Truly authentic 70s psych — hell they regularly do covers of Master of the Universe by Hawkwind….

Who is doing THAT these days?? Sorry I should clarify — their self-titled debut came out this year, a great addition to the genre of heavy psych, and sorely overlooked. For me though — the new Demon Head was a level above everything else.

Those guys are moving me in a different way in a way bands like Colour Haze do. Amazing stuff once it clicks. Young Hunter took some time to fully sink its teeth in but my god — moving stuff beginning to end.

As always, not enough thanks can be thrown your way for all of the new ears you give to bands. Tip of the cap to you, dude.

Cheers to you and fatherhood. We were all just living in it. Its progressive vision has only begun to be digested. My Sleeping KarmaMoksha — This one was on various incarnations of the list.

The Swedish trio have very quickly stomped their way into the hearts and minds of the international underground, and rightfully so. The meld was punishing and lost nothing of its groove, wherever it went at any given moment. In a way, I think the album actually benefited from the band giving listeners time to take it in.

ArennaGiven to Emptiness — Ah, so good. I, however, cannot. Thank you for an amazing This entry was posted on Tuesday, December 22nd, at pm and is filed under Features. You can follow any responses to this entry through the RSS 2. You can leave a responseor trackback from your own site.

Elder was 1 on my list as well. Glad to see that there are a few records on here that I am not familiar with so I have some new material to check out when spending some not so much fun time with the in-laws this holiday weekend. This blog has kept me sane while I work away at my boring desk job hitting refresh every hour or so just so I can find some new cool bands to check out.

Would of liked to have seen Carousel make this list. I thought their album was a great beer drinking blue collar album but nonetheless I commend you for giving me numerous new bands to check out.

Big thanks for another year of quality writing on this great scene of stoner metal, psyche, doom, etc. It is by far, my go to site. Your passion bleeds through. My measly. And with Clutch, Visualistic - Micranots - Obelisk Movements (Vinyl, well they delivered another righteous slab of ass Kickin goodness, which is worthy of a much higher ranking. Right on, JJ. Thanks for all the hard work. The Obelisk is the place to go to if discovering, learning, and experimenting with music is on your to-do list.

May it be as, if not more, succesful for you as years past! I think there are 8 albums on this list that are in mine. Certainly Snail and Elder have been great discoveries from articles read here.

Graveyard were my number 1 pick this year, but I really need to check out All Them Witches as well as a number of others. I have some beers and I will be making my way through this list tonight, tonnes to check out!

Thanks for another awesome year of articles and reviews. What I WILL say, is that was definitely the year of the heavy, and from all early signs, could be even better. Thank you to the folks at The Obelisk for keeping up with the plethora of releases from even though I wish there was a little more parity in reviews. Ab in den Reader damit! Another great list, thanks JJ! Love the Snail love, and agree about Elder. I would never kvetch about this and that artist not placing in your top 20, as we both understand the vastness of how much great music there was to choose from.

I even have a couple more to check out now, Sun Blood Stories and Bloodcow! Without this place I would be lost and have no footing in a scene I love. Fatherhood and married life would swallow me whole without having your vast and expansive knowledge at my fingertips in the small sections of time I have free day to day.

Definately agree about Snail and Elder though. Thanks for the top lists bud. And yeah, Elder kicks ass. Easy 1—I was a little worried back in July to see it in the number two spot. I play elder before I go mountain climbing; Lore transports me back to the tops of glaciers and my sojourns in the heavens. Name required. Mail not published, required.
