While I'm not a fan of Dick Francis this one was significantly more fun than the last one I read, though still not the world's best read. It was much better paced, but there were so many things that were heavily focused on that felt irrelevant. I find the way he writes romance tedious.
Especially in this book it felt unwarranted and honestly, didn't make sense in my opinion. And yes, I understand horses are his gimmick, but there was literally no reason for that theme in this. It could have been While I'm not a fan of Dick Francis this one was significantly more fun than the last one I read, though still not the world's best read.
It could have been covered by any other situation and felt shoehorned simply for the purpose of adding horses. After some pondering I've realized what I dislike about his protagonists. They're all infallible, and know everything. Their instincts are perfect, and there is no puzzle too difficult for them to solve. It's unrealistic, and makes them into pretentious assholes. Their resolve is unmatched by anyone else and for that, I can't connect to the character.
I found there were good moments in this book, but they were immensely overpowered by the bad. Jul 24, Contrarius rated it really liked it Shelves: mystery-thriller.
Straight is an especially intense, complex, and atmospheric entry in the Francis series. The book drops you "straight" into tragedy, and it never really lets up from there. Multiple villains are out to get our hero -- and he gets bashed, crushed, squashed, mauled, and generally folded-spindled-and-mutilated in the course of Inner Strength - Perfact Crime - Crimetime (CD) out who did what to whom.

In the meantime Francis teaches us about the gemstone trade, the electronic gadgets current at that time, and several twisty puzzles left behind by the hero's dead brother -- and generally there isn't a dull moment throughout the whole book.
This is another good one. This book sucked me in immediately and moved along a good pace and was interesting. An injured jockey gets a call that his brother in the hospital--he's dead, his wallet is missing, he was killed in an accident and you know it wasn't an accident, even though it looks like one. And the plot thickens.
The brother was secretly dealing with diamonds and having an affair with a Duchess. The brother owned two race horses and something fishy is going on with the horses. The jockey is no dummy and track This book sucked me in immediately and moved along a good pace and was interesting.

Jun 03, Art rated it it was amazing Shelves: dick-francis. Really enjoyed how this story was set up and the study of the diamond industry. Also the understanding between brothers. I enjoy reading Dick Francis books and I am going to miss him as a writer, once I have read all his books. Feb 11, Stacey rated it it was amazing Shelves: englandlibrary-ebookreread.
I loved the entire story line even with one eye rolling moment. Still definitely a 5 star book! Sep 19, Thekelburrows rated it really liked it. A well-executed story that fits nicely beside its peers in the Mystery genre featuring plenty of wit, Britishness, and horses.
Reread it because I haven't found enough new and entertaining authors. Enjoyed it the first time and enjoyed it the second time around. All around good clean mystery. Tightly written, this story romps along with action scenes cleverly interspersed with a mystery, interesting characters and the normal horse racing background. Derek Franklin hears that his brother Greville has been seriously injured in an accident.
He goes to the hospital and is there when his brother dies. He is mugged on the way out of the hospital and Greville's possessions are stolen. When he visits Greville's business he finds there has been a break-in, although nothing seems to have been Tightly written, this story romps along with action scenes cleverly interspersed with a mystery, interesting characters and the normal horse racing background.
When he visits Greville's business he finds there has been a break-in, although nothing seems to have been stolen. This is surprising given that Greville was a gemologist and kept thousands of semi-precious stones on the premises. He then goes to Greville's house to find that it has been burgled.
It will give a good sense of the book to say that this all happens in the first few chapters! Derek is a jockey and has recently hurt his ankle in a riding accident. Dick Francis describes pain very well, without being unnecessarily gruesome about it.
I was cringing as I read some of the passages describing how Derek carried on despite his injury, even riding a horse to display it to potential owners, well before he should have been riding again.
Of course the background detail regarding the racing world is very good. I could feel the tension Inner Strength - Perfact Crime - Crimetime (CD) the trainers, jockeys and owners, all of whom see their horse in a slightly different way. It's a complicated plot, which I won't go into in detail, but it was very convincing.
I learned a lot about gemstones and the cutting of diamonds! I also enjoyed the descriptions of Greville's electronic gadgets.
He had a gadget for everything and was obsessed with secrecy and security, understandable in his business. Derek had a hard time fathoming out what they were all for, or how to work them, but they helped him solve the mystery in the end. Naturally this part of the book has aged less well than some of the others. I can imagine some readers wouldn't ever have seen a micro-cassette in their lives! I smiled over Greville's portable car phone: Derek tried to use it to call his friend, who was driving the car for him, when he wanted to be picked up.
The friend clearly didn't trust the phone and refused to answer it! The most moving parts were where Derek hears from so many people what a good man his brother had been.
He also finds out that Greville had been following his career and was proud of his success as a jockey. They hadn't been particularly close and Derek begins to miss the brother he barely knew. I think many people could recognise this feeling of only appreciating someone after they are gone, Inner Strength - Perfact Crime - Crimetime (CD) mourning for what might have been.
The audio was narrated by Tony Britton. I liked his voice and he managed to do the women's voices successfully as well as the men's. This is a book I would happily read again. Dec 17, Nolan rated it really liked it Shelves: nls-audio. His brother, Greville, was savagely injured when scaffolding fell on him as he walked by a construction site. He was injured in a race and uses crutches as a result.
This is Dick Francis at his best. But even more satisfying is the mystery itself. Greville Franklin operated a gemstone business, and his will named Derek the new sole owner of the company. As you might imagine, Derek had to go on a crash course in learning about gemstones, especially when it comes to light that Greville had purchased diamonds—something the company ordinarily never did—and had told no one where they were kept. The search for them is difficult because Greville was so security conscious.
There were drawers with false bottoms in his house and seemingly harmless objects that turned out to be vastly different from their appearance. It is his plan to return to the track as rapidly as his injuries will heal, and his narrow escapes from death inevitably prolong the healing process. I started it late in the evening and just had to finish it early the following morning.
It seems like years since I hung out with Dick Francis, figuratively speaking, and I was richly rewarded for having done so. Nov 11, stevekeiretsu rated it really liked it. About 20 years ago I went through a phase of reading lots of Dick Francis. Despite having little-to-no interest in horse racing, I remember enjoying them a great deal, as pacy, propulsive thrillers, and coming back to him thanks to finding this book at a local community book exchange, I discovered this assessment remains true.
Although very much a 'genre' writer, who would not win plaudits for fancy prose or abstract sophistication of language, Francis is clearly an extremely talented writer. Gre About 20 years ago I went through a phase of reading lots of Dick Francis.
Greville, arguably the central character of this book, is in a coma by the time we meet him, dead within a few pages, yet we still come to know and like him as the book progresses, by encountering his friends, colleagues and enemies and their posthumous recollections of him. How many thriller authors could pull that off?
Not many, I reckon. Indeed, for most of this book I had a sense of "master at work", so impressed was I by Francis' creation of yet another sharply-crafted page-turning mystery despite the central conceit of the central figure holding everything together, being dead. At the end, I must admit feeling slightly disappointed, as a few things I won't spoilerise with details or even hints didn't seem entirely convincing. The resolution of the mysteries didn't seem to do full justice to the setup and exploration of the mysteries.
Ordinarily I would expect this to severely undermine my appreciation of this type of book, but in this case, I enjoyed it so much along the way I'm giving it a generous four stars anyway. I always enjoy the stand-alone mysteries of Dick Francis.
They always have a tie to the world of horse racing, the hero is a decent person, and the author plays fair with the reader. Straight was no exception. For weeks, for months, I pondered upon the means of the murder.
I rejected a thousand schemes, because their accomplishment involved a chance of detection. For a very long period of time I was accustomed to revel in this sentiment. It afforded me more real delight than all the mere worldly advantages accruing from my sin. But there arrived at length an epoch, from which the pleasurable feeling grew, by scarcely perceptible gradations, into a haunting and harassing thought.
It harassed because it haunted. And now my own casual self-suggestion that I might possibly be fool enough to confess the murder of which I had been guilty, confronted me, as if the very ghost of him whom I had murdered—and beckoned me on to death, Inner Strength - Perfact Crime - Crimetime (CD).
